First mobile app on Predix — demoed at Minds + Machines, presented to GE’s CEO

Overview

I led UX visual design for FieldVision, the first mobile app on GE's Predix platform for industrial IoT solutions. It enables field engineers to track and perform highly complex tasks more efficiently, saving both GE and its customers time and money. It also became an effective enablement tool for the GE sales team.

My role

I led visual design for the entire application and ensured consistency throughout the experience. I was also responsible for interaction design on two features.

I worked closely with a team of five interaction designers, conducting user interviews and contextual inquiries and assisting with quantitative research. This was a large-scale initiative — 18 different features, each essentially an app in itself, with multiple stakeholders and a large product team: 60+ engineers, 3 product managers, 6 interaction designers, and 1 visual designer.

  • To manage design at that scale I created a reusable design system that enabled consistency for every other designer on the team.
  • Drove consistency across the application by collaborating closely with the other designers and running regular UX audits and alignment sessions.
  • Worked closely with six engineering pods, doing QA and reviewing builds regularly for consistency.
Visibility

FieldVision received high visibility in a demo at GE's annual Minds + Machines conference, and was highlighted during multiple executive updates. It was presented to GE's CEO and extremely well received.

Mobile design system

I created a scalable mobile design system to accelerate adoption and accommodate the many use cases across the application.

Branding

I designed the branding for the app. The FieldVision logo and color system create a modern look and feel that reflects the wider platform theme. Color plays an important role in the first impression a user forms when launching the application.

Showcase site

I designed a marketing site for the app to showcase its features and drive adoption with other GE businesses and customers.

Global patterns

UI components, across 15 core platform services
  • A system that held at scale. One visual designer against 18 features, 60+ engineers, and 6 interaction designers only works if the system does the arguing — the reusable pattern library is what kept the app coherent.
  • Field time recovered. Engineers tracking complex industrial tasks got the information on the device already in their hand, rather than back at a desk.
  • Executive visibility. Demoed at GE's annual Minds + Machines conference, featured in multiple executive updates, and presented to GE's CEO.
  • Used as a sales enablement tool by the GE team beyond its original internal audience.
